Mental illnesses are disorders of the brain that disrupt a person's thinking, feelings, mood, daily functioning and ability to relate to others. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are brain disorders that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.
Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion or socioeconomic status. They are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or a poor upbringing,
It is important to notice that these brain disorders are largely treatable. Most people with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by taking prescribed medications.
Equally important is social support, networking with others who understand your needs. Please see our Education page for information on classes and support groups.
